What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a regenerative technique for injuries and aging of the skin. Small needles penetrate the skin in three regimes according to the prescribed needle depth:

  • Cosmetic: < 1mm
  • Medical: 1 – 2mm
  • Surgical: 3mm

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling applies very fine needles to the treatment site using a manual rolling device (Dermaroller) or an electric motorized device (SkinPen). Depending on the needle penetration regimes, different results occur. For cosmetic, the needles probe the two outermost layers of skin, helping to get skin care products in the skin and to promote dead cell shedding. For the medical regime, collagen induction occurs, where new collagen is laid down to the treatment site. In the surgical regime, the needles are able to reach the dermis and subcutaneous, or the deepest layer and just beneath the skin. This level manually remodels the skin collagen network and initiates the body’s natural wound healing process to create new skin. Microneedling is also combined with other techniques including: LED microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling, PRP microneedling, product delivery microneedling and others.

What to expect in a microneedling session?

As a whole, the procedure lasts about an hour. To start, the clinician will apply a topical numbing agent to numb the area over 30 minutes. Next, a skin cleanser removes debris. This is followed by an antiseptic solution. Before starting, a glide substance is applied to prevent abrasion and friction during the microneedling. Now the clinician will start to microneedle the skin, starting in one area and covering all areas to be treated. Immediately upon finishing, normal saline is applied followed by application of the hyaluronic acid.

Microneedling aftercare procedures

The goal of aftercare for microneedling is to protect the skin while the microinjuries recover, usually a period of 24 – 48 hours.

  • leave the treated area alone
  • avoid touching or rubbing the affected area
  • maintain a normal heart rate
  • avoid alcohol
  • avoid other skin treatments
  • gently exercise your face (smiling, frowning, raising eyebrows)
  • reduce sun exposure and wear sunscreen when out

Why use the SkinPen?

Standing as the only class 2, FDA cleared microneedling device, clinical data supports the SkinPen microneedling procedure for the treatment of acne scars. Disposable cartridges containing the recipricating needle head guarantee sterility. SkinPen’s precision sharp needles prevent damage to the skin and were validated to remain sharp for 80 minuets of treatment. With needle penetration depth ranging from 0.25mm – 2.5mm, no interference with facial nerves will occur. As an added bonus, SkinPen is able to reach the hard-to-get spots.
