What is Ketamine therapy?

Ketamine IV therapy has emerged as an option to combat various forms of chronic pain. Katemine is an anesthetic drug that has been used for five decades since its introduction into clinical practice in the early 1970’s. While it has many uses in the field of anethetics, more recently it has been administered intravenously to treat painful chronic conditions such as:

  • fibromyalgia
  • reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)
  • post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD)
  • small fiber neuropathy
  • other painful and depressive disorders and conditions

Before starting Ketamine treatment, you should consult with your physician or psychiatrist first.

How does Ketamine work?

Ketamine is known for their pharmacological action as a NMDA antagonist. Blocking the NMDA receptor and preventing the passage of ions through the channel is what leads to the interruption of pain receptors. While at anesthetic doses katemine result in a complete loss of consciousness, at subanesthetic doses ketamine provide relief for chronic pain and psychiatric conditions. In general, katemine infusions are utliized when other modalities of treatment have failed. In order to see full benefits of this treatment, patients may require several low-dose ketamine infusions.

What is the Ketamine infusion therapy like?

At Genesis, individualized treatment plans are established for each patient and treatment protocols are planned based on your individual pain and responsiveness to treatment. All infusions are prepared and administered by a health professional certified  in anesthesia, and are tailored to each patient’s therapeutic needs. Each IV bag will be infused with medications slowly. The following medications may be used in a ketamine IV treatment:

  • ketamine
  • lidocaine
  • magnesium

While many patients may notice immediate relief, the nature of ketamine and each person’s reaction to treatment makes the duration of relief hard to predict. Usually a series of treatments is recommended to better understand and plan for prolonged pain relief.

Conditions Treated

Many patients are reporting miraculous results with only a few treatments.

  • chronic pain
  • reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)
  • chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • fibromyalgia
  • small fiber neuropathy
  • shingles or post herpetic neuralgia
  • other painful neuropathic conditions
  • bi-polar depression
  • post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD)
  • severe anxiety
  • other depressive disorders

Risks & side effects of Ketamine treatment

In general, ketamine therapy is very well tolerated by patients. However, ketamine is a derivative of phencyclidine (PCP) which can cause hallucinations if not paired with sedation. All of our patients will receive benzodiazopene to control the dysphoria.

Other possible side effects include:

  • nausea
  • drowsiness
  • loss of appetite
  • insomnia
  • high blood pressure
  • muscle spasms
